Thank you to all that have been stopping by the Studio, calling, emailing, etc. to talk about the Festival. It has been a great experience hearing from everybody and we look forward to continuing the discussions on Monday evenings at the freeRADlab cafe. We are working on getting the discussion groups together now. Screenings began in September! Stop by and support fellow Film Makers and the Philadelphia Independent Film festival if you are in Philadelphia. Free Coffee/Tea ... Mondays, 8pm-12am EST. $5.
We have been hard at work putting the next Festival together and have begun to officially screen movies for June 2009. This is by far the best part of the festival. We plan to vBlog this as we go ... We hope to screen over 800 movies this year! PLEASE try and send them in early! We are working on the New Festival website now. We'll have updates and a launch by Nov 13th. An Evening with Xaviera Hollander: the Happy Hooker
Just when the squelching heat began to dissipate under the influence of a glancing thunderstorm, Xaviera Hollander tongue tied an overflow audience made hot again as the Happy Hooker revealed a timeless message.
The documentary, XAVIERA HOLLANDER "THE HAPPY HOOKER": PORTRAIT OF A SEXUAL REVOLUTIONARY, describes her life story. She began life during World War II imprisoned in a concentration camp run by vicious, anti-Semitic Japanese militia in Java, Indonesia wherein her unique conditioning history generated a powerful sexual appetite. The movie then spanned her early adolescence, bisexuality, rise to fame, and evolution to monogamy with new husband Philip de Haan. Through it all, the Happy Hooker continued her embrace of life while challenging, with grace and wit, the love-stifling sexual repressiveness of most cultures.
At the showing of her world premier sellout, this feminine feminist and icon of the 70's era sexual revolution dismissed, as unworthy of lost pleasure, the symbolic castration of men by women who more narrowly define their gender's politics. To a question about Jill Nagle's book, Whores and Other Feminists, Xaviera praised the poly-fidelity and poly-amorous movements that have begun to infiltrate the culture and called for a man’s liberation movement. She explained that while women's liberation has greatly advanced the plight of women, men can be divorced, impoverished, and denied access to their children due to wives making their marriage untenable. "This is a time for men's liberation.”
Noting how differently people answer her probing questions about sexuality when they’re with a partner, she explained that the most frequent male fantasies were GOOD blow jobs and a ménage à trois with two women. Lamenting the homophobic effects of our culture’s training, she then praised women’s superior capacity for vivid fantasy and challenged a young woman with boyfriend to reveal her secret fantasies. The woman developed a sudden case of lockjaw.
In a subsequent interview, producer John Patti revealed his hopes that, through this movie, the younger generation will get a clue about what the sexual revolution was all about and why it will remain critically relevant throughout their lives. The extent to which the movie succeeds at this will vary with the size of its distribution which shows early signs of being quite large. John reported that Showtime Network is strongly considering purchasing the film rights and the film was accepted by both the prestigious Dances With Films festival in Los Angeles (July 25th - 31st) and the inaugural West Hollywood (CA) International Film Festival (July 29th - August 1st).
At the freeRadlab, the festival’s managing director Steve Greenbaum and Xaviera posed for a picture. A bystander recalled a recent picture in which Xaviera had cupped porn legend Annie Sprinkle's bosom. A lusciously perky technical support person piped up: “I have tits!” but this was not enough to get a photo op with the famous Madame. Later, Steve and his pregnant wife Lauren posed with Xaviera for a photo. Lauren explained that the reason she couldn’t answer Xaviera’s question of whether she wanted her daughter to be a hooker like her when she grows up was because she didn’t know the sex of her unborn child.

Philadelphia Independent Film Reaches Cruising Altitude
June 28th, 2008 Philadelphia, PA: Since Thursday the Northern Liberties neighborhood in Philadelphia has added to the heat as the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival’s much anticipated lift off has achieved cruising altitude.
Extolling the virtues and defining the requirements of the authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak, “This is My Cheesesteak” launched viewings at the Media Bureau venue. At the same time, 3 blocks away, “Flowers for Rwanda” suppressed the people’s appetite with a thoughtful challenge to respond to global culture’s failure to prevent genocide. An hour later, 941 Theatre presented “Over the River,” a child-centered view of the Civil War and its aftermath.
“Green Guerrillas” followed "This is My Cheese Steak" with a sizable entourage. There was a fascinating convergence of this organic lifestylist movement and the political-corporate community with the generous sponsorship by SEPTA of the film festival and its inclusion in the program schedule of a new ad campaign connecting bus ridership to green as a “rallying cry to promote environmental consciousness.”
At Media Bureau, “Ode to Peace” presented a patriotic sideshow of close-up trauma inflicted on American soldiers in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Other excellent activizing films included “Killer at Large” and “At Home in Utopia.” The first did an amazing job of linking obesity, the energy crisis, corn sweetener, and agricultural exports to the obesity epidemic which it covered at a graphic fine-grain level that included live footage of a liposuction procedure and its byproducts. General Hospital never showed it like this. The film on utopia was an awe-inspiring look back at the history of Jewish Radicalism in America that was crucial to understanding the power, beauty, and foibles of this unique American heritage.
Meanwhile, at Media Bureau’s FreeRadLab Café, film makers, festival organizers, industry experts, and neighborhood citizens rapped past and current film making experiences, plans, local film industry economics, success tips, and the extension of films into cinematically-inspired politics. Obama’s campaign sent in an activist organizer while McCain’s office appeared to be stuck in Harrisburg. Nonetheless, a McCain supporter promised to enliven the continuing free-rad lab discussions of the relationship between film making and current socio-political concerns.
All in all, 19 movies were shown on Thursday and 56 on Friday. Today the festival is projected to show 40 and 38 tomorrow. More film- and freeradlab-inspired comments to follow.
Rain or shine ... Outdoor screenings go on and the skys clear up.
The time is 7:15 and we had monitored the weather all day ABC and NBC and the word was that we would need to move the outdoor venues (3 total) to City fitness.
We stood firm.
The show went on and by screening time of 9:00pm the sky's were clear and the sweet Delaware River breeze was blowing in. Glory at Sea (Ben Zeitlin), Streets Keep Calling Me (Lionel Cook), Fun for Hire (Nicholas Stone), Larry the Actor (Eric Poydar), LORA (Gabor Herendi), Digital Pamphlateer (Bill Simmon), Cutting th eRug, Turning the Wheel: Beats and Buddism in Northern India (Harrison Blum), were all crowd favorites.
Glory at Sea had some audience members (Liberty Land) in tears.
LORA was especially well received as the Film Maker was in from Sofia, Bulgaria.
Streets Keep Calling Me is an early favorite for local movies ...

Gerald is a visualist with an eye for comedy, offers the double-barreled punch of a veteran craftsman’s experience fused to a fresh, quirky, post-modern sensibility and will use his talent in critiquing selected films and providing valuable to feedback through interaction and dialogue with filmmakers. When asked about speaking to filmmakers, Gerald says, "Life is too short for one bad short". Gerald will be in Philadelphia performing with DEVO on Saturday June 27th at the School of Rock music festival and than can be seen speaking at The Philadelphia Independent Film Festival on Sunday June 29th at 3pm.

Gerald embraced spot directing via the boot camp of music-video. He started by directing and co-writing the songs and concepts for more than 20 music-videos with his pioneering new wave band DEVO. After creating DEVO’s legendary, low-budget camp style, sci-fi live shows and Dadaist costumes he graduated into the 90’s and beyond with high-profile EFX videos for groups such as The Foo Fighters, Sound Garden, Silverchair and A Perfect Circle. Having helmed more than 100 music video productions, Gerald felt ready to make the leap to commercials. “The lessons I learned in the music-video trenches prepared me for the highly collaborative world of directing TV commercials” says Casale. “The pressure is on to deliver exactly what you promise. To get a great result you have to create an atmosphere of trust.”

After creating DEVO’s legendary, low-budget camp style, sci-fi live shows and Dadaist costumes he graduated into the 90’s and beyond with high-profile EFX videos for groups such as The Foo Fighters, Sound Garden, Silverchair and A Perfect Circle. Having helmed more than 100 music video productions, Gerald felt ready to make the leap to commercials. “The lessons I learned in the music-video trenches prepared me for the highly collaborative world of directing TV commercials” says Casale. “The pressure is on to deliver exactly what you promise. To get a great result you have to create an atmosphere of trust.”
The Philadelphia Independent Film Festival will be screening 151 films in 7 venues over 4 days through out the historically radical artist community, Northern Liberties. All events are within walking distance of one another with the film screenings taking place at The Media Bureau, North Bowl, Liberty Lands Park, Arbol Café, Liberties Walk, 941 Theatre & Woodshop Film Studios. With the US Metropolitan city of Philadelphia as its backdrop, the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival is a yearly meeting of the artist and business community that encompass the innovation, creativity, diversity, and uniqueness of film making.

Festival Screener Format - The Facts!
Hello again,
We would prefer to screen movies in DVD (NTSC). You all asked.
Please note that we are screening in 6 different venues in the same neighborhood. :)
With that said, we are capable of screening using the following formats: DVD, miniDV and SONY HDCAM. If you must have the movie screened in HDCAM format, please contact us now. We will only discuss this option until the 19th.
The deadline for Festival Screener's is June 21st! Please get them in ASAP.

No exceptions! Please....
We have a steady stream of requests for Festival screener types. We are most excited by DVD, mini-DV, DVC-Pro, and HDV in NTSC format. NO Beta SP! Please.

We have posted to WAB and emailed you all about submission status. Please contact us if you did not hear. We do not anticipate this. Thank you so much for submitting and we look forward to speaking with you all in the coming days. If we are unable to screen your movie this year, please stay in contact with us. We will be holding events and many screenings (including daily programming in our HD theater and online) throughout the year and have other plans such as http://IndieFilmArchive.com and HDSDfootage.com in development.
We will post schedules here, daily, as they happen and we will have a final schedule by May 31st.

It seems like there is an intense Buzz about the Festival as we are literally swamped with phone calls, emails, and requests for information... We promise to keep this BLOG updated and answer all requests! So keep them coming.

Festival Screeners ... UPDATE 050108
People have been asking about the actual media that we can screen with.
Here's the answer ...
As it is our inaugural year, we are asking that all Festival Screeners be provided using the following Media: DVD, mini-DV, DVC-Pro, and HDV in NTSC format. We will expand this as we grow. IF you have special needs, please contact us. We will tell you what we can do!
We can only accept screeners that use the PAL format (for Festival Screening) as DVD's at this stage. This might change by Festival time. We will keep you updated.

Submission Deadline has passed! ... UPDATE: New venue added ...
Ongoing ...
We have received over 300 (322) submissions from 26 countries to this years Festival at this date. Thank you. Thank you. We have been watching movies for 3 months now and are humbled by the clear effort of all. It is obvious that Independent Film making is alive and well through out the world. We are confident that the success of this years submissions will only make for a fantastic inaugural year. You be the judge.
We have added another outdoor screening location...
The Aribol Cafe is an intimate cafe with a great "public" outdoor yard. Head over to the Venue section of the website for more information.
PRIZES:
Their have been many inquiries about prizes. We are not offering prizes this year as it is our inaugural year. We didn't think we could! We figured that the Films themselves would do the talking. We will not stop listening to ideas on this though. Feel free to get in touch with any comments.

Venues and Ticketing - PLEASE READ ... :)
All Screening Tickets are 6-8$ and can only be purchased at the venue's. PLEASE note the Venue (hit the Venue link on our website for descriptions, capacity, and directions) that the film is screening in and its capacity.
Some venues are intimate and have 50 seats while another has 150. We have outdoor screenings and other events planned (speakers etc) in the neighborhood as well.

Welcoming the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival
Media Bureau would like to announce the launch of the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival, which seeks to further enable the culture of independent filmmaking by sponsoring an annual event with screenings and discussion of locally and globally produced movies and movies-in-progress.
The festival will screen a variety of films in familiar and unfamiliar genres.
