3rd Annual Philadelphia Independent Film Festival 2010

Philadelphia Independent Film Festival 2010 up and running!

Hello all,
Well the grand scheme has been thwarted and we are now moving along just fine! We have many things going on and are well underway for 2010. The people have spoken. The founders have returned.

The Festival will be held June 24-28, 2010. Media Bureau, 725 N. 4th Street, will be the Box Office as it was for the inauguration year (2008). The late night screening room will be open for the truly daring. Film slams have risen again!

All films / events will be returning to Northern Liberties. The walking festival is back on...

We have spent the better part of the last 15 months debating openly the goals of our festival, seeking out like minded film types, expanding the link between local and non local film makers, and are having fun again watching the movies! Ok, so it is not part of the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival but we think it would have been cool if the Awards ceremony would have been there anyway and Rich Medina is one of the best HipHop DJ's (Can you say ... Rock Steady Crew!) in the East. Period.

We hope you all have been having a good time. We promise next year to be on a different level. Events will be happening here in Philadelphia as the year goes on. As well, we will be attending the Film Festival Convention in Las Vegas (October?). We hope to see you there...

As the founder and original Festival Director at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival (2008) I want to thank all of the Film Makers, everybody who participated, and all who gave their time. When I conceived the idea and wrote the mantra as to why this festival was starting up and what it hoped to do, it was a sincere attempt at connecting to the heart of the film world - the Independent Film Maker.

Hello everybody,

Thank you to all that have been stopping by the Studio, calling, emailing, etc. to talk about the Festival. It has been a great experience hearing from everybody and we look forward to continuing the discussions on Monday evenings at the freeRADlab cafe. We are working on getting the discussion groups together now. Screenings began in September! Stop by and support fellow Film Makers and the Philadelphia Independent Film festival if you are in Philadelphia. Free Coffee/Tea ... Mondays, 8pm-12am EST. $5.

We have been hard at work putting the next Festival together and have begun to officially screen movies for June 2009. This is by far the best part of the festival. We plan to vBlog this as we go ... We hope to screen over 800 movies this year! PLEASE try and send them in early! We are working on the New Festival website now. We'll have updates and a launch by Nov 13th. Nov 26 is the official opening of submissions. BUT, if you feel it is ready and want to send it over now, please do. Check out http://PhiladelphiaIndependentFilmFestival.com for more information.

An Evening with Xaviera Hollander: the Happy Hooker

Just when the squelching heat began to dissipate under the influence of a glancing thunderstorm, Xaviera Hollander tongue tied an overflow audience made hot again as the Happy Hooker revealed a timeless message.

The documentary, XAVIERA HOLLANDER "THE HAPPY HOOKER": PORTRAIT OF A SEXUAL REVOLUTIONARY, describes her life story. She began life during World War II imprisoned in a concentration camp run by vicious, anti-Semitic Japanese militia in Java, Indonesia wherein her unique conditioning history generated a powerful sexual appetite. The movie then spanned her early adolescence, bisexuality, rise to fame, and evolution to monogamy with new husband Philip de Haan. Through it all, the Happy Hooker continued her embrace of life while challenging, with grace and wit, the love-stifling sexual repressiveness of most cultures.

At the showing of her world premier sellout, this feminine feminist and icon of the 70's era sexual revolution dismissed, as unworthy of lost pleasure, the symbolic castration of men by women who more narrowly define their gender's politics. To a question about Jill Nagle's book, Whores and Other Feminists, Xaviera praised the poly-fidelity and poly-amorous movements that have begun to infiltrate the culture and called for a man’s liberation movement. She explained that while women's liberation has greatly advanced the plight of women, men can be divorced, impoverished, and denied access to their children due to wives making their marriage untenable. "This is a time for men's liberation.”

Noting how differently people answer her probing questions about sexuality when they’re with a partner, she explained that the most frequent male fantasies were GOOD blow jobs and a ménage à trois with two women. Lamenting the homophobic effects of our culture’s training, she then praised women’s superior capacity for vivid fantasy and challenged a young woman with boyfriend to reveal her secret fantasies. The woman developed a sudden case of lockjaw.

In a subsequent interview, producer John Patti revealed his hopes that, through this movie, the younger generation will get a clue about what the sexual revolution was all about and why it will remain critically relevant throughout their lives. The extent to which the movie succeeds at this will vary with the size of its distribution which shows early signs of being quite large. John reported that Showtime Network is strongly considering purchasing the film rights and the film was accepted by both the prestigious Dances With Films festival in Los Angeles (July 25th - 31st) and the inaugural West Hollywood (CA) International Film Festival (July 29th - August 1st).

At the freeRadlab, the festival’s managing director Steve Greenbaum and Xaviera posed for a picture. A bystander recalled a recent picture in which Xaviera had cupped porn legend Annie Sprinkle's bosom. A lusciously perky technical support person piped up: “I have tits!” but this was not enough to get a photo op with the famous Madame. Later, Steve and his pregnant wife Lauren posed with Xaviera for a photo. Lauren explained that the reason she couldn’t answer Xaviera’s question of whether she wanted her daughter to be a hooker like her when she grows up was because she didn’t know the sex of her unborn child.

Philadelphia Independent Film Reaches Cruising Altitude

June 28th, 2008 Philadelphia, PA: Since Thursday the Northern Liberties neighborhood in Philadelphia has added to the heat as the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival’s much anticipated lift off has achieved cruising altitude.

Extolling the virtues and defining the requirements of the authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak, “This is My Cheesesteak” launched viewings at the Media Bureau venue. At the same time, 3 blocks away, “Flowers for Rwanda” suppressed the people’s appetite with a thoughtful challenge to respond to global culture’s failure to prevent genocide. An hour later, 941 Theatre presented “Over the River,” a child-centered view of the Civil War and its aftermath.

“Green Guerrillas” followed "This is My Cheese Steak" with a sizable entourage. There was a fascinating convergence of this organic lifestylist movement and the political-corporate community with the generous sponsorship by SEPTA of the film festival and its inclusion in the program schedule of a new ad campaign connecting bus ridership to green as a “rallying cry to promote environmental consciousness.”

At Media Bureau, “Ode to Peace” presented a patriotic sideshow of close-up trauma inflicted on American soldiers in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Other excellent activizing films included “Killer at Large” and “At Home in Utopia.” The first did an amazing job of linking obesity, the energy crisis, corn sweetener, and agricultural exports to the obesity epidemic which it covered at a graphic fine-grain level that included live footage of a liposuction procedure and its byproducts. General Hospital never showed it like this. The film on utopia was an awe-inspiring look back at the history of Jewish Radicalism in America that was crucial to understanding the power, beauty, and foibles of this unique American heritage.

Meanwhile, at Media Bureau’s FreeRadLab Café, film makers, festival organizers, industry experts, and neighborhood citizens rapped past and current film making experiences, plans, local film industry economics, success tips, and the extension of films into cinematically-inspired politics. Obama’s campaign sent in an activist organizer while McCain’s office appeared to be stuck in Harrisburg. Nonetheless, a McCain supporter promised to enliven the continuing free-rad lab discussions of the relationship between film making and current socio-political concerns.

All in all, 19 movies were shown on Thursday and 56 on Friday. Today the festival is projected to show 40 and 38 tomorrow. More film- and freeradlab-inspired comments to follow.
